Functional furniture- we all love it, especially those living in small spaces. Eco-friendly features – we all search for them and hope they become more and more familiar. The Smallroomcollection of seating elements combines function and modern design and hides the story of wanting to create a greener office space. These elements were gathered in the design of three items of 1 meter, 1,5 meters and 2 meter long that can be arranged in many ways, shaping different configurations.

Someone using this seating unit can either work on their laptop or enjoy the plants seen in the “weed” configuration or even have a conversation in the tête à tête configuration. Side and back panels are just the right height – high enough to offer privacy and low enough to avoid blocking views. Designed by Dutch designer Ineke Hans, the Smallroom also features armrests that can have different functions – simple upholstery for resting, wood-covered and with optional power sockets for laptops and a container version for storing magazines in reception areas or plants in waiting rooms. Produced for Swedish company OFFECCT, the Smallroom seating configuration offers a modern alternative for highly used office and waiting room furniture.

There are a lot of good chairs out there. I ltuaicrlarpy like the idea mentioned before of a memory foam seat cushion. I have seen alternating air pressure seat cushions used in wheelchairs that will no doubt be working their way into regular office chairs soon.Unfortunately, in my opinion, this doesn’t actually address the reason sitting is so hazardous to begin with short hamstring muscles.Fairly quickly after sitting the muscles take up the slack, pulling on bottom of the hips, and as a result, slumping the lower back.In the lower back, the slumped posture in combination with substantially reduced stabilizing muscle use causes pretty much everything from disk problems to passive tissue failure (when you dig into it, it’s actually amazing just how many things can go wrong with your back). The excercise ball is great in that it promotes keeping the hips in a neutral posture. You can do that by bringing your toes under your butt in that awkward excercise ball way with any old chair. My personal favorite are those stool chairs. The hip, and therefore, back positioning are great with them. I don’t know if it makes a difference but it allows the hips to stay in the most loose position possible too (called the open packed’ position for the hips). Now, if all the desks were only 14 higher to match Sorry for almost turning this into a rant. None of my social (or work) circles care about this stuff so I thought I’d get it off my chest. I will get off my soap box now.
